WHAT IS PMCS?

THE PHILADELPHIA MONTESSORI CHARTER SCHOOL:
  • is a FREE, PUBLIC charter school.
  • is a Montessori school. Montessori is a proven method of education that focuses on the development of the whole child, utilizing mixed-age classrooms, hands-on education, and individually-paced instruction.
  • places peace education at the cornerstone of the educational design.
  • Adapts well to the needs of many special needs students due to its emphasis on multi-sensory presentation, the multitude of hands-on work, individualized tasks and inherent self-pacing of the lessons.
  • is open to all Philadelphia residents (if the school over enrolls, students are selected by lottery).
  • opened in September 2004 with 144 children ages three through twelve (preschool through third grade). The school will add one grade per year until we reach sixth grade during the 2007/08 school year.
  • is located in Southwest Philadelphia at 2227 Island Avenue.

MISSION

The mission of the Philadelphia Montessori Charter School is to provide early childhood and elementary school children in Philadelphia with a comprehensive, developmentally appropriate, innovative educational environment that will enable them to become young adults possessing strong self-discipline, independent and analytic thinking skills and an enduring love of learning.
